8U Practice Plan

8U Small-Area Games & Puck Touches

A high-energy 8U practice built around movement, puck touches, creativity, and simple small-area games.

Practice Snapshot

Age: 8U
Length: 60 minutes
Level: Beginner / mixed ability
Main Focus: small-area games, puck touches, skating confidence
Equipment: Pucks, cones, bumpers or tires, 2-4 small nets if available

Practice Flow

0:00-0:08 - Free Puck Exploration

Every player starts with a puck. Coaches move through the zone encouraging turns, stops, changes of direction, and head-up skating.

0:08-0:18 - Gate Skating With Pucks

Set cone gates around the zone. Players skate through as many gates as possible while carrying a puck.

0:18-0:30 - Sharks and Minnows With Pucks

Players try to carry pucks across the zone while coaches apply light pressure. If a puck is lost, the player retrieves it and keeps playing.

0:30-0:42 - 2v2 Cross-Ice Game

Use short shifts and small teams. Keep the puck moving and change groups quickly.

0:42-0:52 - Treasure Puck Game

Teams collect pucks from the middle and bring them back to their base. Players must carry one puck at a time.

0:52-1:00 - Fun Finish Game

End with cross-ice play. Coaches praise effort, smiles, and players trying again after mistakes.

Teaching Points

Progressions

Next Shift Challenge

Count puck touches, not perfect plays. The goal is to create comfort and confidence through repetition.

Setup and inclusion

Use the same half-ice or cross-ice setup. Diagram areas are used in sequence. Split 12 players into two groups of six for skill games. For 2v2, rotate two resting players per group every 30-40 seconds.

Make it easier

Widen gates, reduce pressure and play 1v1 alongside a coach before moving to 2v2. Keep games short and encouraging.

Goalies

No fixed goalie is needed with small nets. If a goalie attends, alternate short live-play reps with coached movement and rest; avoid one child facing every shot.

Safe play

No elimination or body checking. Avoid converging on one pile of pucks. Use gentle pressure and shoot only toward the designated goals.
